For this tour, we focus not only on birds, but also on the cultural aspects of this unique country Marvel at the dramatic mogotes (limestone hills), pristine coral reefs, and endless beaches. Delight in amazing variety and numbers of birds, many of which are endemic to Cuba, like the Bee Hummingbird, the smallest bird in the world! 

During our 10-day exploration of this fascinating and little explored country, Gail and a local expert birder lead you on an adventure to observe the birds and culture of Cuba up close and personal.  highlights include the Cuban Trogon—Cuba’s national bird, known locally as the Tocororo—and the world’s smallest bird, the Bee Hummingbird. We will visit prime birding hotspots and encounter the lively spirit of the Cuban people as we learn from residents.

  • Search for over 165 indigenous and migratory birds, as well as mammals, reptiles, amphibians, fish, and invertebrates at Las Salinas.
  • Explore the many historical influences that have shaped Cuba as we explore colonial Old Havana on foot.
  • Target species also include Cuban Grassquit and Olive-capped Warbler.
  • Meet with residents at Las Terrazas, a nature reserve and community that is a model of sustainability and ecotourism.
  • Bird the distinctive limestone formations of Viñales Valley looking for Cuban Solitaire, Cuban Tody, and Cuban Pewee.

ABOUT YOUR LEADER

Gail Garber, Executive Director, discovered her passion for birds nearly 30 years ago. Since then, she has dedicated her life to avian studies, education, and other aspects of Hawks Aloft. She has traveled extensively for birding, including much of the U.S. as well as Canada, Venezuela, Honduras, United Arab Emirates, Kenya, and Tanzania. She has led birding tours to New Zealand, Ecuador, Costa Rica, and closer afield within the U.S. Garber is a popular speaker for adult programs throughout the Albuquerque area and at birding festivals in New Mexico and Colorado where she regularly leads raptor tours at various events, sharing her love of birding and conservation.
