How to HOOT

We need the help of citizen scientists throughout New Mexico to tell us about nesting raptors in the state. As a minimum we require your contact details and the location and species information for each observation. Additional information is helpful, such as UTM coordinates (if known), observed activity, and proximity to power structures. Click on the following link to download further information.

 HOOT Forms and Information

 Barn Owl

The HOOT Project is most interested in the following bird species:
  • Cooper’s Hawk
  • American Kestrel
  • Swainson’s Hawk
  • Red-tailed Hawk
  • Mississippi Kite
  • Great Horned Owl
  • Western Screech-Owl
  • Burrowing Owl  (please also report sightings of this bird to the NM Burrowing Owl Working Group)
  • American Crow
  • Common Raven

Need help with identification? Read our Guide to Common Raptors and Other Large Birds of New Mexico for more information about the most common raptors found in New Mexico, and the seasons in which they are present. We also have a color Pocket Guide available for purchase. The study results will be reported in map form on this web site each winter. The map will show general locations of nesting raptors. We hope that you will help us with our ambitious project.

Thank you for your assistance. Please contact hoot@hawksaloft.org if you have any questions or comments, or would like to donate to this project.
